FAQs

Pool Balls

A standard game of pool uses 16 balls: one white cue ball and 15 numbered object balls. Of the ‘object’ balls, numbers 1–7 are solid colours, number 8 is black, and numbers 9–15 are striped.

Modern pool balls are made from phenolic resin, a durable and heat-resistant synthetic material that ensures consistent weight, balance, and rebound. Cheaper balls may be made from polyester resin, which is less durable and can wear faster. Historically, pool balls were made from materials like ivory, clay, and Bakelite, but these have been replaced for performance and ethical reasons.

No. Pool balls have a diameter of 2 ¼ inches (57 mm), while snooker balls have a diameter of 2 1/16 inches (52.5mm).

You can clean pool balls by hand or using a cleaning machine. Check out our guide and follow the tips below:

  • Apply a mild detergent or spray evenly across each ball
  • Wipe each ball in small circular motions with a Microfibre cloth
  • Dry thoroughly to prevent streaking
  • Store in a clean case

We stock a range of training balls suitable for beginners.

To set up pool balls, arrange the 15 object balls in a triangular rack with the apex ball on the foot spot. Place the 8-ball in the center of the triangle, a solid ball in one corner, and a striped ball in the other. Make sure all balls are tightly packed before removing the rack. The cue ball is placed behind the head string for the break shot.

Snooker Cues

Snooker cues have a larger tip and a softer feel. They’re generally lighter and more flexible. Pool cues are thicker and heavier.

The right cue length depends on your height:

Height - Cue Length

Under 5’6” = 56” - 57”

5’7” - 6’2” = 57” - 58”

Above 6’2” = 58” - 59”

A 9.5mm cue tip is generally preferred for its spin and accuracy. A larger tip (9.8mm or larger) allows more power and stability for beginner players, while advanced players might prefer 9.5mm or smaller.

To protect your cue, follow these steps:

  • Use a cue case for storage and transportation
  • Lay it flat or upright to prevent bending or warping
  • Wipe down after each session

One-piece cues are preferred by players who have a dedicated space and don’t have to travel to play as much. Two-piece cues are more convenient to transport, but the joint can be a distraction.

Cue Chalk

Cue chalk is essential for both pool and snooker because it adds friction between the cue tip and the cue ball. This friction improves accuracy, grip, and spin control, helping players strike with confidence and reduce miscues during play.

The best cue chalks are made by trusted brands such as Taom, Kamui, and Master. These professional-grade chalks are formulated for consistency, reduced residue, and long-lasting grip, making them the top choice for serious snooker and pool players.

To maintain reliable contact and cue ball control, players should chalk their cue before every few shots or whenever the tip looks smooth. Regular chalking ensures consistent performance and prevents miscues during critical plays.

No - the colour of cue chalk doesn’t impact performance. However, many players prefer blue or green chalk because it matches the colour of most table cloths, making marks less visible while maintaining a clean, professional look.

Pool chalk and snooker chalk are similar in composition but vary slightly in texture. Pool chalk is usually softer and better suited for larger cue tips, while snooker chalk tends to be harder and finer to suit the smaller, precision tips used in snooker cues.

Snooker Tables

A full-size snooker table measures 12ft x 6ft, the official size used in tournaments. Smaller versions like 9ft or 10ft tables are available for homes or clubs with less space.

Snooker tables are larger, have smaller, rounded pockets, and use smaller, lighter balls. This makes the game more about precision and control than power.

Strachan cloth is the professional standard. Made from fine wool and double-shaved, it offers a smooth, fast-playing surface with consistent ball roll. View our table cloth collection.

  • Brush daily to remove dust and chalk.
  • Iron weekly to keep the cloth flat and fast.
  • Wipe rails and pockets with a soft, damp cloth to protect the finish.

Regular care maintains the table’s performance and extends its lifespan.

Technically, yes, if you have the space to accommodate the table! A snooker table requires ample room for gameplay. You’ll need a space that can fit the 12ft x 6ft table, plus room for movement.
