How to Care for Your Cue: Tips to Keep It in Top Condition

You’ve just bought a new cue — now what? Looking after it properly is the key to keeping it straight, smooth, and playing the way it should. A good cue can last for years if it’s cared for correctly. Here’s what we recommend to help you keep your cue in top shape.

Wipe it down after every session
After playing, take a dry, soft cloth and give the shaft a quick wipe. This removes chalk dust, sweat, and oils from your hand that build up over time and affect how smoothly the cue moves through your bridge.

Use a proper cue cleaner if needed
For occasional deep cleaning, use a cue-specific cleaner to remove stubborn grime or stickiness. Don’t use furniture polish, window cleaner, or anything alcohol-based — these can dry out the wood and damage the finish.

Keep it away from heat and moisture
Don’t leave your cue in the car, near a heater, or anywhere it might be exposed to extreme temperature or humidity. Wood can warp if it dries out or absorbs moisture. Always store it in a cool, dry place — ideally in a hard case.

Don’t lean it against walls or corners
This is a common mistake. Leaning a cue upright against a wall puts uneven pressure on the shaft and can cause it to bow or warp over time. Always lay it flat or store it in a case upright with full support.

Protect the tip and ferrule
Avoid banging the tip on the floor or table. If your cue uses screw-in extensions, make sure not to overtighten — this can crack the ferrule or damage the threads. Keep the tip shaped and clean using a cue tip tool or sandpaper.

Use a cue case, always
Even if you’re just playing at home, a case protects your cue from dust, bumps, and accidental drops. For club players, it’s essential — especially when travelling. Choose a case with proper internal padding and support.

Check the tip regularly
If the tip is worn down, chipped, or not holding chalk properly, it’s time to replace it. For most players, this is every few months depending on how often you play. We stock a full range of tips in different sizes and styles, and we also offer quick tip replacement at our Glendenning shop.

A cue is an investment — treat it like one
Good cues aren’t cheap, and they’re not easily replaced. A little maintenance goes a long way. Look after your cue and it will reward you with consistent feel and performance every time you step up to the table.
