Essential Tools for Pool and Snooker Table Care

Proper table care starts with using the right maintenance tools. A dedicated pool table brush removes chalk dust and loose fibres without damaging the cloth. For tables with directional nap cloth, a napping block is used after brushing to realign the fibres and maintain consistent speed. Non-directional cloth still benefits from regular brushing to keep the surface clean and responsive. Additional accessories such as rests, rail cleaners and table covers and overhead table lighting support long-term cloth condition and improve overall playability.

Types of Pool Table Brushes and Their Uses

Pool and snooker table brushes are available in different sizes to suit various areas of the table. Full-length brushes are designed for the main playing surface, while smaller rail brushes allow access under cushions and along the rails. Soft natural bristles glide over the cloth without pulling fibres, making them suitable for both nap and non-directional cloth. On Snooker and English pool tables with nap cloth, brushing should always be done from the baulk end toward the black spot to maintain correct cloth direction. American-style non-directional cloth can be brushed straight to remove build-up without the need for napping or ironing.

Cleaning and Maintaining a Tablecloth

Cleaning methods vary depending on the type of cloth fitted to your table. Nap cloth should be brushed in long, even strokes before using a napping block to settle the fibres in one direction. Light ironing at low heat may be used on snooker-style nap cloth once the surface is clean to improve speed and consistency. Non-directional cloth should not be ironed, as heat offers no performance benefit and may damage the fibres. Covering the table between uses, maintaining proper lighting conditions, and using compatible table accessories all help protect the cloth and extend its lifespan.
