      Frequently Asked Questions

A standard game of pool uses 16 balls: one white cue ball and 15 numbered object balls. Of the ‘object’ balls, numbers 1–7 are solid colours, number 8 is black, and numbers 9–15 are striped.

Modern pool balls are made from phenolic resin, a durable and heat-resistant synthetic material that ensures consistent weight, balance, and rebound. Cheaper balls may be made from polyester resin, which is less durable and can wear faster. Historically, pool balls were made from materials like ivory, clay, and Bakelite, but these have been replaced for performance and ethical reasons.

No. Pool balls have a diameter of 2 ¼ inches (57 mm), while snooker balls have a diameter of 2 1/16 inches (52.5mm).

You can clean pool balls by hand or using a cleaning machine. Check out our guide and follow the tips below:

      • Apply a mild detergent or spray evenly across each ball
      • Wipe each ball in small circular motions with a Microfibre cloth
      • Dry thoroughly to prevent streaking
      • Store in a clean case

We stock a range of training balls suitable for beginners.

To set up pool balls, arrange the 15 object balls in a triangular rack with the apex ball on the foot spot. Place the 8-ball in the center of the triangle, a solid ball in one corner, and a striped ball in the other. Make sure all balls are tightly packed before removing the rack. The cue ball is placed behind the head string for the break shot.
