Pool Table Cloth Replacement Guide

Pool table cloth doesn’t last forever.
Over time it wears, stretches and loses consistency. You might notice the table slowing down, balls drifting slightly, or the surface just not feeling the way it used to.
This guide explains when cloth should be replaced, what affects how a table plays, and what to expect from a proper recovering.

HOW LONG DOES POOL TABLE CLOTH LAST

Cloth lifespan depends on how the table is used and where it’s located.
A home table used occasionally can last for years. A table used regularly will wear much faster, particularly around high-contact areas.
Outdoor tables generally require more frequent replacement due to exposure to moisture, dirt and temperature changes.
Rather than a fixed timeframe, it comes down to how the table is playing.

SIGNS YOUR TABLE NEEDS RECLOTHING

Cloth wear is not always obvious at first.

Common signs include:

  • the table feels slower than it used to
  • balls don’t run straight or consistently
  • visible wear marks or thinning areas
  • cloth moving slightly under hand pressure
  • inconsistent response off cushions

If the table no longer feels predictable, the cloth is usually the cause.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF TABLE CLOTH

There are two main types of cloth used across cue sports, and they behave very differently.

Napped Cloth

Used on snooker tables and most English pool tables.
This cloth has a directional grain, which affects how the ball travels. Playing with or against the nap produces different results, and installation needs to follow the correct direction.

Worsted Cloth

Used on American pool tables.
This cloth is non-directional, faster and more consistent across all directions. It requires a different installation method to napped cloth.

WHY INSTALLATION MATTERS

Replacing cloth is not just about fitting new material.

How the cloth is installed affects:

  • speed of the table
  • consistency across the bed
  • cushion response
  • how long the cloth lasts

Incorrect installation can lead to problems even with brand new cloth.

CAN YOU REPLACE CLOTH YOURSELF

It’s possible, but it’s not straightforward.

Recovering a table involves removing the existing cloth, preparing the surface, and installing new cloth with the correct tension and sequence. Mistakes during installation can affect how the table plays and may require the job to be redone.

For most tables, particularly larger or higher-quality ones, professional installation is the
safer option.

INDOOR VS OUTDOOR CLOTH REPLACEMENT

Indoor tables are generally more consistent and easier to recover.
Outdoor tables require additional preparation, particularly where adhesive has been used.
Exposure to the elements also affects how the cloth wears and how often it needs to be replaced.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM A RECLOTHING

A properly recovered table should:

  • feel consistent across the entire surface
  • provide predictable ball movement
  • respond evenly off the cushions

The table should not just look better — it should play properly.
