Choosing your first cue can feel overwhelming — tip sizes, cue weights, cue lengths, joint types... it’s a lot to take in. But it doesn’t have to be confusing. Whether you’re playing snooker, English pool, or USA pool, this guide breaks it down so you can confidently pick a cue that suits your game.
Snooker vs Pool – What Game Are You Playing?
Before you choose a cue, you need to know what you're playing. Snooker, English Pool, and USA Pool each have slightly different requirements — and the right cue will help you play better from day one.
Snooker Cues
Tip size: 9.0mm to 9.8mm
Length: Usually 57"
Feel: Light and balanced
Purpose: Built for control and finesse — perfect for the precision of snooker.
English Pool Cues
Tip size: 8.5mm to 9.5mm
Very similar to snooker cues
Slightly thinner taper and sometimes lighter
Ideal for smaller tables with tighter pockets
Many players use the same cue for both snooker and English pool — especially with a tip around 9mm or more. Unless you're playing at a high level, the difference comes down to feel.
USA Pool Cues
Tip size: 12mm to 13mm
Weight: Typically 19–20oz
Taper: Shorter, with a thicker shaft
Grip: Often includes a wrap
Designed for more power and control on larger pool tables with heavier balls
If you’re playing American-style 8-ball or 9-ball, a USA Pool cue is the right tool for the job.
What Tip Size Should You Choose?
Tip size plays a big role in how much control or power you’ll have.
8.5–9.0mm – English Pool finesse and soft contact
9.0–9.8mm – Snooker control and cue ball precision
10mm+ – More power, useful for breaking
12–13mm – Standard for USA Pool
If you’re just starting out, a 9.5mm tip is a safe and versatile choice for snooker or English pool.
What Weight Should You Use?
Cue weight comes down to personal feel, but here’s a general guide:
17oz to 18.5oz – Common for snooker
18oz to 19oz – Often used in English pool
19oz to 20oz – Standard for USA pool
Lighter cues offer more touch and finesse. Heavier cues give more power. Somewhere around 18.5oz is a good place to start if you’re unsure.
Do You Need a Case or Extensions?
If you’re playing regularly or taking your cue to clubs, a cue case is essential. It protects your cue and makes transport easy. If you're playing snooker or English pool, a 6" mini butt and telescopic extension are often needed on club tables. Cue packs are a great way to get everything you need without overthinking it.
